On pain & character & hope … and a crazy boy.

There was this kid in junior high who had a mantra. It was “pain builds character”. He would say it often and assuredly. Sometimes he would follow up with trying to jam a pencil in his thigh and then yell out. Regardless, he said it so much, it is engraved in my brain.

The thing is, I’ve never really decided if I agreed with him or not.

Pain could build character. It could deplete it. It could destroy it entirely. I kind of think it’s up to you.

Perhaps it’s possible that the only tangible purpose of your pain is that it reminds you that you are in fact alive.

As much as I hate to say it, I almost think it’s healthy. It means we want more because we are reminded that we know different. We know better. And that, in and of itself, gives us hope.
