Silencing the Big Bang

I wasn’t going to write anything about the fireworks, but there is a side of me that feels the need to document it for Avery while it’s fresh in my memory. The Fourth of July was always the highlight of the summer for me as a kid and my family always did it up big and they did it up well. Food, fun, fireworks, family. (oh wow – 4 F’s)

Anyway…last year, Avery was scared of the fireworks. She covered her eyes and cried a lot. Experiencing the fireworks with her, looked like this:

This year was a bit different. Everything was great until she heard them. Then she said they were too loud. Brian expressed concern about her hearing. I expressed concern about the possibility of getting ticks from the grass where we were sitting. We all just kept on watching. Taylor loved it.

Last year it took us over an hour to get out of the parking lot at the Rec Center and there was no way we were getting stuck like that again this year, so we parked on Mack Hatcher and set up our chairs in the grass about 25 feet behind our car. We waited about 40 minutes for the works to start, which was scheduled at 9:30 and started on time as far as I could tell. So with Taylor in awe, and Avery covering her ears, we hung out enjoying it and then Brian & I looked at each other and went, “Was that the finale!?” and jumped up from our chairs told the girls to get in the car fast and we bolted outta there. We were all buckled in and on the road in a matter of minutes. It was 9:42 actually.

Maybe it’s just me, but in a great place like Franklin, Tennessee, I would have thought that we’d get more than 10 minutes of fireworks for the year. I seem to remember at least 30 last year. As a kid, we always got an hour, but I digress. Gone are the good ole days…except at Disney World where the fireworks will knock your socks off every night of the year. Regardless, we had a great time and lots of laughs together, which is all that matters anyway.
